Hello,my name is Richard Louv. I was born in 1949. I have a beautiful wife named Kathy Frederick Louv, and we have two sons, Jason, who is 29 and Matthew, who is 23. Truth be told I would rather go fishing than write, despite being the author of a national best seller.
I am an American nonfiction writer and journalist. I have written eight books. The most popular one out of the eight, and the one I am most known for, was Last Child in the Woods. This novel investigates the relationship of children and the natural world in current and historical contexts. I believe that having a lack of nature in our lives can cause many types of behavioral issues. Thanks to my book, I was able to cause a national debate over getting our children and nature back together so that are future generations; helping them to be better at balancing the virtual world with the real world.
I have written for the New York Times, The Washington Post, The Time of London, and various other major publications. Between the years of 1984 and 200, I was a columnist for The San Diego Union-Tribune and have been a columnist and member of the editorial advisory board for Parents magazine. I use to be an advisor to the Ford Foundation's Leadership for a Changing World award program. I currently serve on the board of directors of ecoAmerica, the editorial board of Ecopsychology, and am a member of the CitistatesGroup.
I have won many awards such as Audubon Medal which is presented by the National Audubon Society, the Cox award for 2007 the 2008 San Diego Zoological Society Conservation Medal, the 2008 George B. Rabb Conservation Medal from the Chicago Zoological Society, and the 2009 International Making Cities Livable Jane Jacobs Award. I have appeared before the Domestic Policy Council in the White House as well as at major governmental and professional conferences, nationally and internationally, most recently as keynote speaker at the American Academy of Pediatrics National Conference
